with Media Audit Tool/Pro
Media Audit Pro™ (sometimes referred to as MAP, MAT or Media Audit, depending on the context) helps you find digital assets on your Joomla site that are no longer referenced anywhere, so you can safely clean them up without breaking your site.
What Media Audit Does
Media Audit builds an inventory of your site's media and sorts each asset into one of three states:
- Referenced — actively used somewhere on your website.
- Unreferenced — not currently used anywhere that Media Audit can detect.
- Trash — moved aside by you, but easily restored to its original path.
Because Media Audit trashes assets instead of deleting them outright, you can test your site with an asset removed and restore it instantly if anything breaks.
How It Works
Did you know?
Deleting an article doesn't delete its images—it only removes the links to them. That's why deleting content doesn't free up disk space. Media Audit shows you exactly which media files are still in use and which ones can be safely removed.
Media Audit relies on Analyzers — small Joomla plugins that know how a specific extension stores references to media. Each Analyzer looks inside its extension's own data (articles, modules, custom fields, etc.) and reports back everywhere it finds an asset in use. Media Audit combines these reports with your media library to determine which assets are Referenced and which are Unreferenced. Official Analyzers are auto-discovered the moment they're installed and enabled — no configuration needed beyond turning them on.
Upgrade to Pro
The free edition includes one Analyzer, for Joomla's own content: articles, categories, modules and menu items.
For many Joomla users this will be sufficient to understand how all the site's media is used. For intermediate and advanced Joomla users, you should upgrade to Media Audit Pro to add virtually unlimited Analyzers, and even make your own.

Add the Asset Intelligence Engine™ (AIE)
Adding the Asset Intelligence Engine (AIE) to Media Audit Pro unlocks deep, per-asset analysis through rich Asset Intelligence Reports, including:
- Live links to every place an asset is referenced, as discovered by your active Analyzers.
- Rendered Intelligence, which determines an asset's actual displayed dimensions.
- Actionable Asset Optimization Advice when an asset could be improved.
- Optimize Now, which automatically resizes an image appropriately and safely moves the original to the trash.
